Nestled in the heart of Harlem at 340 W 145th St, Charles Pan-Fried Chicken stands out as a soulful dining gem that passionately celebrates authentic soul food traditions. This cozy spot delivers a culinary experience that transcends the ordinary, inviting you to indulge in flavors that are rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying.
The menu is a heartfelt homage to classic soul food fare, featuring standout dishes that keep locals and visitors returning for more. The pan-fried chicken is a masterpiece—crisply golden on the outside, bursting with juicy, well-seasoned dark meat inside. Whether you opt for the tender Pan-Fried Thighs or the flavorful Pan-Fried Wings, each bite offers a perfect harmony of texture and bold seasoning, a flavor profile that’s distinctively more soulful and real than your average fried chicken. Combine it with staples like collard greens that boast a deep, meaty essence, and candied yams that hit the perfect balance of sweetness and warmth, and you’re in for a truly authentic meal.
For those who crave a hearty Southern dinner plate, the Smothered Chicken and BBQ Ribs plates are not to be missed—generously portioned and paired with rich, creamy sides like baked mac and cheese or classic mashed potatoes. The kitchen sides elevate every visit, featuring Black Eyed Peas and Mac & Cheese melding traditional comfort with soulful flair. If dessert is your capstone, their freshly made Sweet Potato Pie, Red Velvet cake, and Peach Cobbler are decadent, homestyle delights that offer that nostalgic, buttery sweetness you’ll crave long after you leave.
Customers have highlighted the authenticity and heart in every dish. Phillip Kautz praises the flavor of the fried chicken, noting its perfect crispiness that isn’t overly crunchy but deeply satisfying, while Edward B commends the juiciness and seasoning that keeps guests coming back. Though the cornbread may have been a little dry for some, as Dwayne Tulloch thoughtfully pointed out, the rest of the lineup more than makes up for it. Joseangel Claussell truly captures the community feel and warmth of the spot, emphasizing its “corner joint” charm reminiscent of a mom-and-pop soul food haven found right in Harlem’s vibrant streets.
Charles Pan-Fried Chicken exudes an inviting, no-frills atmosphere—the kind where the focus is unapologetically on the food and genuine hospitality. While seating may be limited and the place can get bustling, the friendly and hardworking staff ensure you feel welcomed and well taken care of. Desiree Seabrook’s advice to come early echoes a common sentiment: get there before the sides sell out to fully savor the experience.
If you’re searching for soul food that’s honest, flavorful, and deeply rooted in Harlem’s culinary heritage, Charles Pan-Fried Chicken is a must-visit. From the unforgettable pan-fried chicken to the lovingly prepared sides and iconic desserts, it’s a destination that both comforts and excites the palate—a true celebration of soulful tradition served with heart.
Very good food. Saw them on IG from Florida and made sure we try it when we Visit New York. Cornbeard was the only short fall. Cuz it was dry.
Heard about this place for years and finally got a chance to try it. It was worth the long wait, I will not wait as long to return. This fried chicken might not be what you're used to, but the flavor is incredible. Real dark meat that it crisp and not overly crunchy. That's why people love it! Cornbread is equally old school, not some fluffy stuff. Collards were excellent- meaty tasting and so tender, even the stems were soft to the tooth. The staff is friendly, professional and also entertaining. Will return soon!
Great spot Right on the Corner the way it should be In HaRLem Much Love To The Crew Working And Service Amazing Fried chicken Collard Greens Candy yams Dessert cheesecake Peach cobbler Mac & Chesse top of the list in Manhattan... This is hands down the best fried chicken I've ever had! Make sure you go early so that they don't run out of sides. The service could be better but I know the place stays packed and the workers are always very busy. I definitely wish they had more seating and a public restroom for paying customers would be nice but it is definitely worth the trip!
Very friendly service and impeccable food. The chicken was sooo juicy and seasoned well. Would definitely recommend picking up some Mac and cheese too!!
I’ve been going to Charles for years, from when he was at the restaurant located by 155th street. Food was better than too…and cheaper. The food is still good, I was skeptical when he expanded because I know how often the quality goes down. I’d say, it’s still pretty good. I always get the smothered fried chicken (extra gravy) with collard greens and macaroni & cheese. I used to get the yams but they’d been lacking in real authentic flavor so I skip them. Cornbread 5/5. Tasty, right amount of sweetness, slightly fluffy. Collard greens 4.5/5. Pretty good, add some meat and I’d rate it a five. Seasoned well, cooked slowly and they’re not canned. Smothered fried chicken 5/5. My fave dish. This man can do the hell out of some gravy. Chicken is always cooked well and seasoned to perfection. Oh and I always ask for and they give me extra gravy. Macaroni and cheese 4.5/5. It’s been getting better since the expansion. Sometimes, it’d be good and other times it’s just okay. Right amount of cheese in it. Fruit Punch 3/5. Typical koolaid. Not crazy about it but I always drink it. I wish they’d offer a half and half or Arnold Palmer. I’ll try the sweet tea one day too. Overall, I could write more, but an easy 5/5 for ME. I appreciate that he’s a southern black American man running this restaurant, lots of other soul food joints are ran by others. I have an old review from his old spot on Yelp, but this is pretty good. Keep up the excellent work sir!
I rarely give 5 stars but this place gets 5 stars! The food is amazing! The flavors are so subtle but rich! The yams have an amazing rich taste but so subtle. The black eyed peas are so delicious but such a subtle seasoning. My only complaint is that this place is pretty much take out only. No good seating here.
I love grabbing Charles Pan Fried chicken once in a blue! However this now the 3rd time in my past visits when they forgot to give me my cornbread, even after reminding the employees twice. It’s frustrating going all the way home and then realizing it’s not in the bag. Management needs to make sure employees are reminded of what orders come with what. Hopefully my next visit will be a bit different.
